Celebrating Open Access Week

Open Access week is an annual event taking place from the 24th – 28th October.

Publishing open access has been celebrated and publicised during this week for the past 5 years, with the idea being to educate people about the benefits of open access, and to raise awareness in the scientific community.

Open access week is an international event, with events and activities taking place in over 100 countries, with more than 2,000 participants getting involved. The week is organised by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and will be publicised by libraries, institutions and universities the world over.

Open access was made possible with the creation of the internet, and since then has been steadily growing in popularity. Compared to traditional subscription journals, open access is a very new idea, so not enough readers and authors are aware of the quality and availability of open access journals and publishers. During the week of 24th to 28th October, academics and supporters the world over will be raising awareness for the potential of open access publishing.

The purpose of open access is to have educational material available for everyone to read, print, download, and distribute free of charge. All access barriers to the work are purposely removed, and copyright does not apply unless the work is used in further research.

Benefits of open access for authors include:

  • A higher rate of citations for your article

  • Greater online visibility for your work

  • Faster publication speed in journals

  • A wider availability of knowledge for further research

Readers also benefit from open access as they can download and read as many articles they like, without paying anything or being in any way restricted.

Clinical Medicine Insights: Oncology Reader Profile: Dr Peter Sumba

Tell us about where you work. What do you do there, and who do you work with?

I work for a medical research organization called ‘Kenya Medical Research Institute’. I am based at the Centre for Global health, in Kisumu city on the shores of Lake Victoria.

I have been involved in medical research and teaching for the last thirty years. In that time I have collaborated with international groups like CDC Kenya, Waltereed Army Research, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), State University of New York (SUNY), University of Massachusetts (UMASS), University of Minnesota (UMN) and Ministry Of Health for Kenya.

What are your primary areas of research? What are your aims in these areas?

My research focus has been on clinical malaria & chemotherapy responses, malaria vector behaviour & use of chemical impregnated materials, eave based curtains and sisal strands, indoor residual spraying as control tools, and bio-assays for evaluation of chemical specificity. I have also evaluated the impact of malaria exposure on endemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL) (childhood cancer) in western Kenya. I conducted this research because of the common presence of malaria parasites and Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) in the eBL tumors in this region. The two agents have not proved to be sole etiological managers of this disease.

Lately my research has included GPX selenium, a selenoprotein whose deficiency is associated with increased oxidative stress, increased EBV and high malaria parasites. The study aims to understand the role of malaria and selenium in the process leading to DNA changes and subsequent tumor development. It is our hypothesis that frequent maternal exposure to malaria in areas with reduced dietary selenium intake has the consequences of intrauterine foetal birth restriction and poor gene pool development.

The rural Kenyan population are further exposed to poor environment conditions associated with anthropogenic activities, agrichemicals, firewood smoke and other fossil fuels which expose the foetus to gases like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). All this may contribute to the multistep development of cancer in the sub-population, which is what I would like to research in future.

What contributions have you made to these areas so far? What is the broader importance of your contributions to these areas?

The outcome of our work can be seen in many of my publications. Recently we demonstrated that GPX selenium and malnutrition affects the EBV and malaria densities in the eBL high risk area. This study was published in the British journal of cancer in 2010.

I am also working on a manuscript to outline the role of other micronutrient antioxidants in the spatial distribution of eBL in the region. The outcome can be supportive in disease prevention through supplementation of selenium or any key antioxidants.

What directions do you expect your research in these areas to take in the near future?

I am planning evaluations of: selenium species and their levels in expectant mothers, heavy metals from soil around specified residential areas, crop sampling, and monitoring of nutrition transition. This should give us an idea of what is in the environment and how that affects the population when they are exposed to it.

What do you consider to be the most important recent developments in your areas of research?

One of the key developments in my research is teaming up with other researchers from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda under the banner EMBLEM (epidemiology of Burkitt lymphoma in East African Children and Minors). The forum will provide room to understand the bio-availability of different biomarkers in populations who may be exposed to different environmental aggressors, food and possible genetic profiling.

New SCImago Journal Ranking for Evolutionary Bioinformatics

Libertas is pleased to announce that Evolutionary Bioinformatics has recently been given a SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) ranking of 0.4.

In addition to the SJR ranking, SCImago also calculated that articles published in Evolutionary Bioinformatics receive and average of 3.12 cites each, totalling 106 cites for the journal since 2007.

The SJR Ranking system is similar to impact factors in that it calculates the level of online visibility for journals, but different as each of them are calculated based on different information. The ranking is calculated for all journals indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus database using the Google PageRank algorithm. Ranking was first done in 1996, but seeing as Evolutionary Bioinformatics is a relatively new journal, it has only recently been ranked.

The benefit of this ranking for authors is that they can see which journals have high online visibility and citation rate, so they know which journals to publish in to get the highest readership and exposure. The ranking for Evolutionary Bioinformatics is especially impressive given how new the journal is, and shows that Libertas’ journals include many high quality papers, and receive high online visibility.

Press Release: U Of M Researchers Find Gene Biomarkers Can Predict A Patient’s Ovarian Cancer Therapy Response & Survival

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (October 12, 2011) — University of Minnesota Medical School researchers have identified gene biomarkers that can predict which patients with advanced stages of ovarian cancer (stages III-IV) will respond to standard chemotherapy (platinum/taxol) and which will fail.

The results of the research are published in the October 3, 2011 online issue of the journal Cancer Informatics.

Epithelial ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological cancer in the United States, but because of the lack of overt symptoms at the early stages of the disease more than 60 percent of patients receive a diagnosis when their disease has already reached an advanced stage.

As a result, health care providers need to know quickly which patients will respond to standard chemotherapy and which will not, shaving valuable time off their treatment approach.

“This research will allow physicians to identify those patients who will not respond to the standard chemotherapy and to apply a different treatment from the outset, which could increase the survival of those patients,” said the study’s lead author Dr. Jason B. Nikas of the University of Minnesota Medical School. “Furthermore, this research could lead to the development of new, more efficacious pharmaceuticals that could considerably extend the survival of those patients, or perhaps even constitute a cure for this disease.”

To arrive at their results, the study’s authors examined ovarian tumor tissue from patients with advanced cancer prior to chemotherapy and determined gene expression profiles. After treatment, patients were stratified as treatment responders and long-term survivors (living greater than 7 years) or treatment non-responders and short-term survivors (living less than 3 years).

The researchers found that specific combinations of genes were capable of predicting treatment responders vs. non-responders with accuracies greater than 95% based on 54 ovarian cancer patients (24 responders/long term survivors, and 30 non-responders/short term survivors).

In their report, the researchers also indicated that the biomarkers identified in their study represent altered gene networks that could serve as targets for the development of novel and more effective pharmacological treatments.

“The next step is to confirm these gene expression biomarkers with additional ovarian cancer patients in order to establish the clinical utility of these biomarkers,” said co-investigator Dr. Walter Low of the University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center. “We’re obviously excited about this research and what it could mean for the advancement of treating this disease.”

Other co-investigators participating in this study are Dr. Amy Skubitz and Dr. Kristin Boylan in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. This research was funded with grants from the National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute.

Tell us about where you work. What do you do there, and who do you work with?

I used to work as Associate Professor of community medicine at Cairo University in Egypt. Now I work in the epidemiology department of the College of Medicine at King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia. I graduated in 1987 from the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University. After graduating in 1990 I started teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, mainly in the field of epidemiology and bio-medical statistics.

What are your primary areas of research? What do you aim to achieve in these areas?

My main area of research is non-communicable disease epidemiology, with special emphasis on cancer, the nutritional aspect of disease and the role of physical activity. I am also interested in adolescent health as this represents a critical transition from childhood to adulthood, and can affect many health and psychiatric problems. Both these domains are still young and we have great expectations for them as cornerstones of prevention and control measures.

What contributions have you made to these areas so far? What is the broader importance of your contributions?

I am still not satisfied with what I have done so far. My previous publications highlighted several good points about provision of a valuable database and exploring areas of concerns, but there is a still lot of work to do to create a real impact.

What directions do you expect your research in these areas to take in the future?

Thus far I have not yet researched tropical diseases, micro-nutrient deficiency, and genetic mutation of some cancer, especially breast cancer. My agenda also includes research that tackles psychiatric epidemiology and health-related behaviour.

What do you consider to be the most important recent developments in your areas of research?

There are many important developments such as analytic software, rapid evolution of genetic diversity of diseases etiology and non-invasive DNA sampling.

What is Tumblr?

Tumblr was founded in 2007 with the aim to be easy to use and allow high quality videos and photographs to be easily uploaded and viewed. Since then it has been highly successful, breaking into the top 10 most popular social media sites.

Tumblr is one of the largest and fastest growing social networking sites in America. It attracts around 13.5 million visitors every month has received over 5 billion posts to date.

Why is Tumblr Unique?

Tumblr is unlike other social media because it focuses on vision and sound posts instead of text. Almost all posts on Tumblr include a photograph, drawing, video, or auditory clip. This makes Tumblr an ideal medium for Libertas to promote new articles that feature unusual and appealing images.
