Call for papers for Clinical Medicine: Case Reports from Dr Chandu Bardhan

Dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to invite you to submit a paper to Clinical Medicine: Case Reports, an electronic open access peer reviewed journal.

Case reports are not only of academic interest across a wide readership but are also of immediate relevance to practicing clinicians. The majority of doctors across the world practise medicine, and without doubt most have at some time come across “memorable patients” from whom they (and possibly their colleagues as well) have learnt. Many yearn to share their experience; Clinical Medicine: Case Reports now offers the ideal vehicle. Reading case reports commonly triggers a variety of memories, emotions and ideas from personal practice and experience. This I feel is a major difference from the research studies published in traditional medical journals: these may or may not infl uence practice tomorrow whereas case reports can impact today.

Busy clinicians who are prepared to present their patient’s case in an educational forum or informally are sometimes reluctant to write about their experience as they feel “intimidated” by what they perceive as the effort involved in transforming bedside clinical discussions into a cogent and coherent paper. Yet the typical case report does not differ greatly from that of cases presented during Ward Rounds, Group Discussions or in Grand Rounds. Simply ask: “What have I learnt from my patient?” “Lots”. “Will this information be of interest to others?” “Yes”. If so, then try and put the message across directly and in brief. Effort? Yes. Rewards to oneself? Far greater!

What is the advantage to you of publishing in Clinical Medicine: Case Reports?
  • Full open access: everyone can read your article and you retain copyright in it
  • Publishing decision within 2 weeks of submission
  • Your paper will not be rejected due to lack of space and will be published immediately on acceptance
  • Prompt and fair peer review from two expert peer reviewers

Interview with Dr Parag Bharadwaj

This interview is with Dr Parag Bharadwaj, Editor in Chief of Palliative Care: Research and Treatment, an electronic open access journal published by Libertas Academica.

Tom: What would you say is the primary focus of your research effort (and how do you refer to your 'sub-area')?

I am most interested in doing clinical research. However if there is a good opportunity and an interesting project presents itself, I don’t miss it. Also, I like to partner with colleagues from other fields and countries. I learn a lot more in the process.

Tom: What do you consider to be the most significant developments arising from research in your area?

Overall research in palliative care has certainly improved quality of care imparted to patients with life limiting illnesses. An interesting aspect of the research has been focus on the caregivers of the patients. Research has allayed some of the common myths associated with symptom management and how we approach death and dying both as clinicians and culturally as a society. Research done in this field will clearly define how physicians are trained and how they deal with patients in the future.

Tom: What do you consider to be the most significant open questions and research challenges in your area?

Common issues that we deal with are the use of opioids on a day to day basis. Only few questions have concrete answers, others concepts remain vague whereas some are poorly understood and studied. Also cultural, religious and ethical issues have a huge impact in our field of work.

Tom: Tell us about your collaborative research. Who else do you directly work with and what are the aims of your collaboration?

I have been fortunate enough to have worked with colleagues from different fields of expertise and different regions on different projects. I like networking with colleagues to learn from them and get the opportunity to work with them. Since there are so many unanswered questions, we come up with questions and try to find an answer.

Tom: Is balancing all these activities challenging? How do you deal with it and what tools do you find useful in doing so?

Quality of life is the mantra in palliative care and I like to practice what I preach. Having said that, it certainly is a challenge.

Tom: When did you decide to be primarily involved in the field that you are now in?

My experiences during my training days, from being a medical student in India to being a resident in Internal Medicine made me realize that often patients with advanced and incurable diseases were given suboptimal care and we are really not well trained to deal with such patients. It was during my Geriatrics fellowship that I made up my mind to pursue training in this filed. Now that you ask, Palliative Medicine was still not a recognized field in the United States during my training period although it was gaining momentum.

Tom: What resources do you find indispensible for your research work?

The most vital to me is a good team with a clear understanding of the roles and contributions of each individual to the project.

Tom: What do you think about the development of open access publishing and open access development? How has it changed your perspective on research or development practices?

I feel it is a unique and excellent opportunity. Authors can have their work reach a vast audience and an unrestricted one. Also, the papers are accessible for free to the readers. What I really like about Palliative Care: Research and Treatment is the opportunity it provides to contributors from developing countries, who might otherwise not be able to afford the submission costs, to have their papers published for free. I also like that it provides for readers to leave comments.

Tom: What books do you think should be required reading in your area?

A must read in my opinion is the Textbook of Palliative Medicine by Eduardo Bruera, Irene J Higginson, Carla Ripamonti, and Charles F Von Gunten. [Amazon.com]

Tom: What books are current on your reading list?

I was recently gifted a book on Ayurvedic Medicine. I am looking forward to reading it.

Tom: Do you teach any courses? If so, which ones?

Apart from teaching the medical trainees, from medical students to post graduate professionals (fellows) at my academic medical center, I am also faculty for a national faculty development mini fellowship program in which trainers are trained.

Tom: Which figures do you think have most influenced you?

I am lucky to state that a lot of my seniors have contributed to my growth. Dr Charles Von Gunten from San Diego Hospice and The Institute of Palliative Medicine has been most influential.

Tom: Which meetings do you attend on a regular basis?

I regularly attend the annual American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine meetings.
I try to attend international meetings when possible.

Tom: If you could change something about how research in your area is conducted, used, perceived, or resourced, what would it be?

It would be the recognition by the medical fraternity of the importance of research and funding for it in the field of palliative care and hospice. No matter what disease patients suffer from, they will eventually die. That is the common pathway, however it is much neglected.

My thanks to Dr Bharadwaj.

Call for papers for Biomedical Informatics Insights from Dr John Pestian

This is the second call for papers for Biomedical Informatics Insights (BII). During the journal’s inaugural years we published nine articles that ranged from a case study about advanced clinical decision support to machine learning methods for prediction of mortality. We have published research about consumer health informatics and statistical analysis of tumors. We have cast a wide net because biomedical informatics is a wide net.

We ask that you submit your original biomedical informatics research to BII. If you do you’ll find that it will be reviewed by your peers within weeks and not months. You’ll find an editorial staff that professionally shepherds you through the open-source publication process and you’ll find that your work will be index in the open access journal system and soon by Pubmed.

What are some topics of interest to BII? Integration of bioinformatics and clinical informatics, clinical and biological linguistics, advanced clinical decision support, case studies that described successes and failures of biomedical informatics installation, economic and policy affects of biomedical informatics. Of course there are many more topics both applied and theoretics.

What is the advantage to you of publishing in BII?
  • Full open access: everyone can read your article and you retain copyright in it
  • Publishing decision within 2 weeks of submission

Call for papers for Glycobiology Insights from Dr Hafiz Ahmed

On behalf of the Editorial Board, it is my great pleasure to invite you to submit your recent research for publication in Glycobiology Insights--a new peer reviewed open access journal published by Libertas Academica.

There is growing evidence that protein-carbohydrate interactions play significant roles in mediating cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions, which in turn, modulate fundamental biological processes such as growth development, immune functions, and apoptosis. Thus, the identification of these carbohydrate-binding proteins (known as lectins) and their partners (carbohydrate ligands), and the detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms and downstream effects of these protein-carbohydrate interactions as well as the carbohydrate modulation by glycosidases and glycosyltransferases are currently subjects of intense research.

We are interested in original research contributions focusing on all aspects of protein-carbohydrate interactions in normal functions and disease states. This includes, but not limited to, interactions between lectins (proteins or glycoproteins) and carbohydrate ligands (glycoproteins, glycolipids, and proteoglycans) and modulation of these interactions by glycosidases and glycosyltransferases. Research reviews and commentaries within the scope of the journal are also encouraged.

What is the advantage to you of publishing in Glycobiology Insights?
  • Full open access: everyone can read your article and you retain copyright in it

Call for papers for Rehabilitation Process and Outcome from Dr Thilo Kroll

Rehabilitation Process and Outcome invites manuscripts that focus on the WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). The ICF is a classification system developed under the auspice of the World Health Organization (WHO) and has the support of all 191 WHO member states. It is a bio-psychosocial framework that classifies health-related domains from individual and societal perspectives.

The integration of the ICF into clinical rehabilitation practice and intervention planning holds significant promise but is also confronted with an array of practical challenges. One of the principal difficulties is the interaction of concepts such as body structure, function, activity and participation and the dynamic interplay of personal and environmental factors. Domain and condition-specific instruments have been developed to capture the different ICF components. ICF Core Sets have been developed among others for brain injury, musculo-skeletal conditions, osteoporosis, low back pain, stroke, cancer, and children with communication disabilities.

Another challenge that has emerged is coding for the different concepts in clinical assessments and the development of reliable and valid tools that capture the respective domains.

Rehabilitation Process and Outcome is calling for research, systematic review and conceptual papers that place the ICF at their center. Particularly, research with focus on scale and instrument development is of interest. Further, papers that explore environmental factors, such as barriers in various community-based settings in which rehabilitation may take place or which people with disabilities have to navigate are very welcome. Manuscripts that focus on evaluations of interventions that are based on ICF concepts would be favorably considered. Conceptual discussions in how ICF constructs may be integrated with ICD-10 or DSM-IV classification systems as well as with psychosocial theories would also be of considerable value to the reader.

Rehabilitation Process and Outcome aims at fostering interdisciplinary dialog and invites submissions from clinical and social science researchers. Work by the latter is of substantial importance to contextualise disability, health assessments and interventions.

The 2007 report by the Institute of Medicine, entitled The ‘Future of Disability in America’ (p. 46/47) states that the ICF is a classification scheme and not a process model of disability or enablement/disablement. Connecting process models that examine environmental and personal factors with the ICF is of critical importance to understand activity and participation outcomes. The same report points to the need of research into the role of quality of life, personal factors and issues of multimorbidity in the context of the ICF.

What is the advantage to you of publishing in Rehabilitation Process and Outcome?
  • Full open access: everyone can read your article and you retain copyright in it
  • Publishing decision within 2 weeks of submission
  • Your paper will not be rejected due to lack of space and will be published immediately on acceptance

Call for papers for Tobacco Use Insights from Dr Zubair Kabir

Tobacco control research is at a crossroads. Increasingly, investigators, policy makers, and practitioners’ recognize the need for concerted efforts to reduce smoking around the globe and across the entire spectrum of smokers. If we are to curb the global tobacco pandemic, that is, avoid one-billion tobacco-related deaths in the 21st century then tobacco researchers and researchers from other fields must expand their focus and make a concerted effort to reduce tobacco use.

Unfortunately, 80% of the tobacco-related deaths would be from the lower-income countries by the turn of this century and yet there is limited tobacco control research from these high burden nations. The reasons for such a polarization might be complex and yet unclear. Context-specific and locally available evidence is a step closer to country-specific tobacco control policy-making.

I would, therefore, encourage researchers particularly from high-tobacco burden low income countries to submit high quality research on all aspects of tobacco control research, as tobacco control research is trans-disciplinary. We cannot but wait to see our young children and the future generations breathing a cleaner and a healthier air. For such a vision our mission is to contribute to evidence based tobacco control research before it is too late to reverse the current trend.
